Racing at the Nürburgring began in 1927 on the road course amidst the Eifel mountains that hosted the German Grand Prix until 1976. The modern Grand Prix racetrack was built between 1981 and 1984; the circuit was later extended in 2001 to its current length of 5.1 kilometres.
