Belgium-based Team WRT has entered a third car for Ashley Sutton in their TCR Europe home race meeting at Spa-Francorchamps.
A former BTCC champion, Sutton will drive a Volkswagen Golf GTI, joining the team’s regulars Maxime Potty in another Golf GTI and Santiago Urrutia who drives an Audi RS 3 LMS.
The 25-year-old Englishman clinched the BTCC title in 2017 and last year enjoyed his first experience in TCR, driving a Honda Civic for Pyro Sport in the TCR UK event at Oulton Park where he won both races. At the end of the season he drove a Golf GTI for WestCoast Racing in the TCR Europe finale in which he finished fourth in Race 1 and third in Race 2. During the current season he is placed fourth in the BTCC.
“I enjoyed very much my first experience in the TCR Europe at Barcelona last year, and I really look forward now to racing at Spa for the first time. I have been there, but not as a driver, and liked it very much. It is, of course, one of the favourite tracks of any driver, with many interesting corners, and I’m really anxious to race there, although I’ll have little time to learn. We will have to play by the ear and approach the weekend without many expectations. I also know I can rely on an excellent team such as WRT, and I hope we can bring home a good result,” Sutton said.
