After setting the fastest time in Free Practice 1, Daniel Lloyd repeated the performance in FP2, being the only driver to beat the one minute thirty-seven second benchmark. The reigning TCR UK champion, driving a Brutal Fish Racing Honda Civic, set a best lap time of 1:36.867 around the Red Bull Ring, a fraction slower than his best lap in FP1.
The early pacesetter after around ten minutes of the half-hour session was Davit Kajaia in the PCR Sport with Georgia CUPRA, although his time was quickly beaten by a string of drivers including Luca Engstler (1:37.216) and Gianni Morbidelli (1:37.255). With five minutes of the session remaining, Lloyd went fastest, moments before Gilles Magnus (1:37.112) also beat Engstler’s time. Kajaia then set a lap time of 1:37.255 – exactly the same as Morbidelli – before he and Magnus were shown the black flag for repeatedly infringing track limits. In all, seven drivers were black-flagged; apart from Kajaia and Magnus, the others included Stian Paulsen, Nelson Panciatici and Jimmy Clairet.
Behind the top five, Alex Morgan (1:37.303) was sixth ahead of Maxime Potty (1:37.342) with Andreas Bäckman (1:37.362), Dániel Nagy (1:37.363) and Tom Coronel (1:37.413) completing the top ten. Remarkably, the top 19 drivers were covered by a little over nine-tenths of a second, with 1.8 seconds spanning the top 27 places.
Lloyd commented: "Not a bad end to the day at all. It's a brand new car, we were expecting some little issues and we had them in the morning with a throttle problem, but this afternoon it really worked properly. It's extremely close, with very narrow gaps and tomorrow it will be a matter of putting everything together. There are still a couple of things to improve and I made a few small mistakes in my fast laps, but we know what we have to do ahead of qualifying."
Qualifying starts at 08.30 CET tomorrow (06.30 GMT), with Race 1 at 13.30 CET. Both races (Race 2 is on Sunday at 11.30 CET) will be streamed live on the TCR websites, the TCR Europe Facebook page and the TCR TV YouTube channel.
