Despite not finishing on the podium, Eric Gené was one of the highest scorers of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, moving up to third in the drivers’ standings, and showing great speed after setting the second fastest time in qualifying in his Monlau Motorsport CUPRA Leon VZ.
The 18-year-old Spaniard is still chasing his first official podium finish, but the pace he showed at the weekend keeps him close in the points behind the leading Audi pair of Teddy and Jimmy Clairet.
“We did a really good qualifying, and a really good Race 1, and we scored lots of points there,” said Gené.
“I think Race 2 was more about trying to stay on track rather than trying to win a lot of positions. It was a really good result, we were not the fastest, but we had really good pace as we knew at Spa-Francorchamps we were going to struggle a bit more.
“For the next race, we’ll be able to push a bit more. I think without the penalty from Portimão, we definitely could have been on the podium this weekend.
“The Clairets have quite a good gap, but the championship is quite long. I think we can still manage to catch them up.”
