Eric Gené takes over the lead of the young drivers’ trophy at the halfway point

Eric Gené’s consistent run, and first win in the Youth Best category for 21-and-under drivers at Hockenheim has helped elevate the 18-year-old Spanish driver to the lead of the trophy points going into the mid-season point.

Gené is just eight points ahead of Marco Butti in the highly competitive category, with both MA:GP’s Viktor Andersson, and Gené’s team-mate Jenson Brickley not far behind.

Gené’s win came in very wet conditions in the second race in Germany, but he was able to make use of his set of wet rear tyres to remain on track and score his first class win of the season.

“It was a survival race, as we saw even under the safety car Butti went off, and I nearly went off on the in-lap even just doing 10km/h,” said Gené. “So it was a really stressful race - we didn’t know what tyres to put, so we went with half-and-half. I’m really happy, running with 30kg this weekend, we managed the weight a lot.

“It was a great result this one, it’s only my second year in TCR, and we’re competing with people who’ve done the FIA TCR World Tour, so I’m really happy to manage the pressure. At the end, the Youth trophy showcases the young drivers in the category, so I’m really, really happy with the result.”
