Felipe Fernández is celebrating a record third consecutive pole position at Spa-Francorchamps, with his focus now quickly turning to the race where he has another chance to secure his first TCR Europe race victory.
The Spanish driver remarked that it clearly isn’t luck after an impressive feat at the challenging Belgian track, with the RC2 Racing Team driver clearly having an affinity with the circuit.
"Three in a row, it’s not just luck. There’s something special between this circuit and myself, so I’m very happy with the lap we did, and I love this circuit!” said Fernández.
Fernández’s pace all came from the final two sectors, where he overturned the gap to Honda rival Mike Halder to deprive the German driver of his first pole position in TCR Europe in four years.
“Honda has always been fast in sectors one and three, but the other brands have been improving their top speed, so I’ve focussed on sector two where there is a lot of things to do with the wheel, and try to be the best in that sector,” explained Fernández.
“We have time to think about the race this afternoon. I’ve had pole in the past, but lost positions at the start, so I’ll try to focus on that and be super-aggressive early on.”
