Franco Girolami has caught back up to Aurélien Comte in the drivers’ standings after Race 2 at Zolder and is tied at the top of the table after finishing in third place in the race, leading for all of one corner after the restart before he was pushed back by the two ALM Hondas of Levente Losonczy and Ruben Volt.
Nevertheless, the Argentinian was happy with his weekend, battling with the biggest weight penalty under the new compensation weight system, as he carried 40kg all weekend, which he’s set to drop 20kg of for the next round.
“It was a very nice race, I enjoyed it a lot,” said Girolami. “There was a lot of friction and a lot of mistakes from some drivers, but it was a good race for us.
“I had another problem with Scamardi when he held me up in the race yesterday, and today at the chicane he hit my car - he probably needs to relax a bit more, he’s racing like it’s the last race of his life.”
Reflecting on the restart where he took the lead at Turn 1 from Losonczy, before the Hungarian got back past him at the next corner, he said:
“I made a little mistake, I could have won the race, I saw an opportunity and passed Losonczy but I couldn’t stop the car and then he retook me and then at this moment I lost apposition to Volt, but it’s OK, P3 for the championship is good.
“It’s also good because now we’ll go with less kilos in compensation weight to Salzburg.”
