Jenson Brickley has become the champion of the tenth season of the TCR Europe series, succeeding his predecessor at Monlau Motorsport Franco Girolami, and the British racer hails an amazing year and thanks his team-mate Eric Gené for his part in the decider.
Brickley went into the final race with a slender five-point lead over Teddy Clairet, and with Clairet ahead on the road, Brickley needed to be close to the French driver to be crowned champion.
With Clairet classified second, Brickley needed support from the team, with Gené dropping from third to fall behind Brickley and defend him, and it ended up that Brickley and Clairet would finish the race on equal points, with the title decided on countback of second place finishes.
“It feels amazing,” said Brickley. “It wasn't a perfect year, we had lots of ups and downs, and to come out on top is so good. A debut year, with a new team, everything worked perfectly. If we didn't have the bad luck we had in the middle, we could have been in a better position for the final race, in the end we came out on top so I couldn't have asked for anything more.”
Reflecting on all the various championship permutations in the race, Brickley explained:
"When the race settled down, I was thinking this was OK, I knew Ruben (Volt) was going to be fast, and if it came to it Eric would help me. I needed a bit of a hand from Eric at the end when Felipe (Fernández) was catching me. I feel sorry for Eric, but also so thankful."
