Jenson Brickley storms to victory at Red Bull Ring as title is thrown wide open

Jenson Brickley claimed his second win of the year, and the second win of the weekend for Monlau Motorsport after a stunning drive from fourth on the grid, and is one of seven drivers to head to the season finale at Barcelona in contention for the drivers’ championship.

Jimmy Clairet started the reversed grid second race of the weekend from pole position in his Team Clairet Sport Audi RS 3 LMS, and managed to hold on to the lead into Turn 1 ahead of his rival on the front row, the Hyundai of Max Hart. Hart however made a mistake at the first corner and was soon under pressure from Brickley, who had already passed Raphael Fournier’s JSB Compétition Hyundai off the line for third.

Brickley managed to pass Hart for second at Turn 2, while in synchronicity behind Brickley’s team-mate Eric Gené overtook the ALM Motorsport Honda of René Kircher for fifth.

The race then became very frenetic especially at the bottom end of then top ten, with Viktor Andersson, Junesung Park, and Fournier all caught up in a tight battle, which allowed former points leader Teddy Clairet to start fighting his way into the top ten to keep his title aspirations alive.

Brickley quickly passed Jimmy Clairet’s Audi at Turn 3. Hart briefly joined the battle for P2 but in doing so was passed by Marco Butti’s charging Honda. Shortly after a collision between Park and Andersson at Turn 3 saw Andersson stop with damage and Park return to the pits, with the race suspended behind the safety car.

Brickley controlled the race from the restart, while Butti was putting Clairet under pressure, while Hart lost fourth to Gené on lap 14.

Butti completed his pass on Clairet with two laps to go, but couldn’t do anything about Brickley ahead, with Brickley grabbing his first win since the season opener at Portimao.

There was one final drama, as contact between Jimmy Clairet and Gené at the final corner put Clairet out of the race, and allowed Hart back past the pair of them into third place. Gené crossed the line fourth, but the incident is one of many under investigations by the stewards.

In the provisional standings, Gené leads the championship by 17 points over Butti, with Teddy Clairet’s eighth place keeping him in third place, while seven drivers go to Barcelona in mathematical contention for the drivers’ title.

The season closer will take place at the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya on September 26-27.
