Julien Briché’s first lap pit stop strategy pays off in Hockenheim

Julien Briché scored his best result of the season to date in the second race at Hockenheim, after the JSB Compétition Hyundai driver opted to pit at the end of the formation lap for a full set of wet tyres, after realising starting on slick tyres had been the wrong call.

With Felice Jelmini surging to the lead from 11th on the grid in one lap, and being the only driver to start from the grid on a full set of wet Kumho tyres, the call proved to be the next best possible decision, with Briché staying on track and charging up the order to finish fourth, one spot away from the podium.

"It was definitely a great race,” said Briché. “I missed my marks a little in qualifying, so we were starting 16th. On the starting grid, I decided to go with slick tyres, which wasn’t necessarily the best choice. Then, during the formation lap, it started to drizzle a bit and I decided to take the risk to come in — I told the mechanics to put the rear tyres on to try something.

“We came in, changed the tyres, and when we went back out, I was hoping for a little safety car that didn’t come. It only came at the end, which is a shame. I think it was a good strategy overall. We shouldn’t have gone with all four slicks, but oh well. It was a nice race."
