Junesung Park elated with first podium on a very strong weekend for Solite Indigo Racing

Junesung Park grabbed a second place finish with a final lap dive, despite suffering with a significant rear tyre rub during the middle of the race, and with the team then formation flying to a fourth and fifth place finish in Race 2, the South Korean team is well-placed in the teams’ championship as well after Spa-Francorchamps.

Junesung Park was aggressive from the start of the race, challenging for the lead up to Les Combes in his Hyundai Elantra N TCR, but didn’t have the pace of eventual race winner Marco Butti. He managed to snatch second away from Santiago Concepción at the final opportunity at the ‘bus stop’ chicane on the final lap however to score his first career podium in only his second race weekend in the series.

In Race 2, Park led team-mate Junui Park to a 4-5 finish in a competitive race, holding back former race winner Ruben Volt’s ALM Motorsport Honda to score key points for the team.

Junesung Park is now fourth in the overall drivers’ standings, while the South Korean team is third in the teams’ classification after a very strong weekend.

“I didn’t expect to get a podium or a second position,” said Junesung after Race 1. “My start was really good, but after a few laps I had a huge contact on my rear which slowed me down, but the problem solved itself and so I kept my pace. Then there were two safety cars and I had a very lucky run on Santiago at the end.

“I had much better results than I expected this weekend,” he added. “The car was good; in Race 2 I used new tyres, but the track was very different to the first race so my pace wasn’t as good as Race 1. My team-mate held position behind me so I had a comfortable race after a lot of battles with the Hondas of Ruben Volt and Sten Dorian Piirimägi.”

Team-mate Junui Park’s fifth place in Race 2 was the young driver’s best result so far in the series as well.

“My qualifying pace was very good, but I made a mistake in Q2,” said Junui. “In Race 1, I used old tyres, but in Race 2 with new tyres I managed many overtakes starting P11, and getting a P5 finish. I’m very happy, it was an amazing car and the tyres were very good also.”
