KUMHO TCR World Rankings: Coronel is the leading TCR Europe driver

Following the weekend’s opening two races in the 2023 TCR Europe championship at Portimão, the latest KUMHO TCR World Rankings have been announced. Several TCR Europe drivers have moved up the order as a result of their performances in Portugal, with the highest-placed TCR Europe driver in the standings being Comtoyou Racing’s Tom Coronel.

Points for the KUMHO TCR World Ranking are based on three factors – the level of the series (regional, national or endurance), the number of cars and the finishing position of the driver. With the TCR Europe event at the Autodromo do Algarve featuring more than twenty cars and, as a regional series, results from the weekend already scored the highest possible of any series this year. In addition, as it was a round of the KUMHO TCR World Tour, all results received an uplift of 50%, which meant that some significant movements were possible for drivers who had a good weekend.

Thanks to finishing first and third in TCR Europe, Coronel moves up two places in the standings and is now in 20th place overall. He’s also in 9th position in the KUMHO TCR World Tour and so, as things currently stand, he would automatically qualify for the TCR World Ranking Final as all of the top fifteen drivers go through. Also currently benefitting from that situation are TCR Europe drivers John Filippi, Kobe Pauwels, Rubén Fernández, Isaac Smith and Ben Bargawanna.

In the top 100 drivers in the KUMHO TCR World Ranking itself, Coronel is in 20th place, with Isaac Smith 26th, Nicola Baldan 43rd, Ben Bargwanna 82nd, Viktor Davidovski 92nd and John Filippi 98th. Kobe Pauwels enters the World Ranking standings in 477th place, while Dušan Borković re-enters the table in 513th position.

Overall, the top two places in the KUMHO TCR World Ranking are currently held by former TCR Europe Drivers’ Champions. Mikel Azcona now leads once again after briefly slipping to second place for one week thanks to Franco Girolami’s results in TCR Italy. Frédéric Vervisch is now in third place after the weekend’s races while the highest-placed Cyan Racing Lynk & Co driver is Yann Ehrlacher in sixth.
