Marco Butti claimed his first pole position of the season with Monlau Motorsport in a close session at the Hungaroring, with ALM Motorsport’s Ruben Volt his closest threat, just 64 thousandths of a second off.
The Italian put in the best lap on his first run with a time of 1:51.954, to secure his second career Pole Position Award by TR Watches, and his first since Hockenheim last year.
Volt lost his first lap time in the session due to track limits, but was even faster on his second run, just narrowly missing out on pole.
Felipe Fernández was third fastest, enforcing the strong pace the Honda teams have shown this weekend. The Spanish driver had set a final flying lap in Qualifying 1 after looking set to exit in the first part of qualifying to get in, but this came at the expense of ALM Motorsport’s Max Hart, who dropped to 13th.
Behind Fernández was Tiago Perníá's Squadra Martino Honda, with the two BRC Racing Team Hyundais of Alex Ley and Gabriele Covini close behind.
Mike Halder had set the fastest time in Q1, but a broken anti-roll bar meant the German only just had time to set a banker lap in Q2 and put his ALM Motorsport Honda seventh on the grid for Race 1, which will flip to fourth for Race 2's reversed grid.
The PMA Motorsport Audis had a difficult session, much as expected given they’re carrying additional compensation weight. Nicola Baldan failed to make the top 12, and qualified in 15th position. Championship leader Nicolas Taylor managed to set a good lap in Q1 to safely progress into Q2, and was in tenth place near the end of the session which would have earned the Canadian pole for the second race, but a last-minute improvement from Viktor Andersson bumped Taylor to 11th, where he’ll start both races.
This means Victor Chan, who qualified in tenth place, will start Race 2 from pole position after the Hong Kong driver progressed to Q2 for the first time this season. Chan was also the best-placed of the Tenerife Trophy competitor in the session. For Race 2's reversed grid, he’ll start ahead of Solite Indigo Racing’s Junui Park, and the CUPRA of Andersson.
The first race is scheduled to get underway at 17:25 CEST.
