Mikhail Simonov celebrates career-best result at Paul Ricard

SP Compétition driver Mikhail Simonov fought for victories in both races at Circuit Paul Ricard, leading Race 1 in his CUPRA, before battling race leader Nicolas Taylor in Race 2 and coming away with his first podium in TCR Europe.

Simonov, in only his second TCR Europe appearance, made an incredible start from seventh on the grid in Race 1 and was in the lead before the end of the lap, before his charge came to an end with a puncture after four laps.

In Race 2, he managed his tyres more cautiously, keeping race leader Taylor in his sights right until the end of the race when he launched a last dash attempt to get by and steal the lead, but ultimately had to settle for second.

“I’m happy to come back and fight for the podium, because in the first race I was unlucky”, said Simonov. “I made a great start from P7 to go to P1, but then had a puncture. Race 2 was much harder for the tyre, so I stayed calm, stayed behind Nicolas as he was fighting with Weyrich, and then I made a push on the final lap.

“I tried my best, and I want to say thanks to my team, they did a great job on the set-up, and now I’m happy that while may be this year I’m not fighting for the championship, I am for myself.”
