Mikhail Simonov collects more trophies at Misano

Neil Hudson

TCR Europe frontrunner Mikhail Simonov picked up another win and a second-place finish during the weekend of the TCR Italy series at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli.

Competing with SP Competitión as he does in TCR Europe, Simonov managed to put on a fight for the victory in Race 1, briefly taking the lead after a mid-race safety car. The CUPRA driver later fell back and had to settle for second, struggling for overall pace carrying 40kg as penance for his double victory last time out in the championship at Mugello.

In Race 2, he soon took the lead before he was passed and fell to second. Holding back a chasing bunch of Italian drivers, he looked set for another strong second-place finish, but a last-lap drama for race leader Cosimo Barberini saw Simonov promoted to the lead, claiming his third win from his first four races in the Italian championship.

Elsewhere in the field, TCR Europe Diamond Trophy leader Sandro Pelatti and his PMA Motorsport team picked up a sixth-place and a tenth-place finish in the two races, while AIKOA Racing had cause to celebrate in Race 2, with its driver Paolo Rocca completing the podium, bouncing back from a heavy crash during the last meeting at Mugello.

Simonov, Pelatti, PMA Motorsport, SP Competitión, and AIKOA Racing are back in action again in the TCR Europe series at the upcoming race weekend at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.
