Nicolas Taylor put his hands up after the remarkable collision in Race 2 at the Hungaroring which saw he and PMA Motorsport team-mate Nicola Baldan crash whilst fighting just outside of the top ten, putting both cars out of the race with broken suspension.
In a difficult weekend for the team, struggling for pace both with the Hungarian circuit not favouring the Audi Sport RS 3 LMS, and with Baldan and Taylor carrying 40kg and 30kg of ballast respectively for their standout performance last time out at Paul Ricard, the aim was all about damage limitation and scoring as many points as they can.
“It was an acceptable weekend is the word I would use,” said Taylor. “I’m not happy with my performance today and it’s certainly not the way we should have ended the weekend, and I’m super-sorry to Nico and the team for causing this, it’s 100% my fault.
“It was a strange sequence of events where there was the Hyundai on the main straight defending from Nico. The Hyundai’s tyre started to explode and slow down, so Nico moved to the left; my car was overheating so I went to the right to get the fresh air but I was on the dirty side of the track. I chose the same brake reference, but the car just wasn’t stopping and Nico was there taking the corner and we came together."
Despite the incident, Taylor continues to lead the championship by 14 points, such was his margin going into the weekend, while PMA Motorsport continue to lead the teams’ championship by seven points over its closest rival Monlau Motorsport.
The stewards also concluded no action was necessary for the contact between the two team-mates. The team’s drivers will also carry no compensation weight at the next round of the championship at Monza, a circuit known to favour the low downforce RS 3 LMS.
