Nürburgring Race 1: Quotes from the podium

Mikel Azcona (1st): “I feel really, really happy. We have extended the Championship lead, which is the best news. It was a tough race; congratulations to Girolami, he also drove a very good race. From the beginning, I tried to analyse him; I saw a couple of corners where he was struggling a little bit more than me. I tried to pass him three times, but he did some really good moves. Towards the end, he was struggling with the tyres and I took the opportunity and went full attack. It was very fair, we try to respect each other. We had two small contacts, but we know each other and we know that it wasn’t on purpose. They were very clean moves and I’m very happy with the race. Now we keep pushing for the Championship.”

Franco Girolami (2nd): “First of all, I want to congratulate Mikel Azcona and his team. He did a very good race. I’m happy, but not so much; I lost the race on the very last lap, but I’m happy for the team, for the result, for the points, for the championship. We lost to the best driver in TCR Europe and maybe in the top five in the world, so I know I can improve. When you lose a race, you know that there is room for you to improve. Azcona had a very good car from the middle of the race until the finish. I didn’t see him on the last lap; he attacked very hard and he was able to overtake me. Because of this, I know which way I have to improve.”

Niels Langeveld (3rd): “The start was good, I was on the outside for Turn 1 and I wanted to overtake Callejas but I overshot a little bit. Then I lost a place because I was on the wrong side, but after that the pace was good, like in Qualifying. Then the balance was going slightly in the wrong direction in the car and I couldn’t keep up. I still hoped that the two in front were fighting so hard that I might get a late birthday present! In the end, I was P3 and of course I’m happy with the points but P1 and P2 in the Championship gained some more points and that’s a pity. Okay, you have Free Practice, you have Q1 and Q2 and then Race 1 but for me the key moment is the reversed-grid race; tomorrow a lot of points can be won and lost, so we need to score points and finish off a perfect weekend.”
