Mikel Azcona (1st): “I’ve been driving in this Championship since 2018 and I remember I only won one race during the entire season when I became Champion. This year, I couldn’t imagine winning five races including two double victories, it’s incredible. I think it’s easier with a new model of car and the experience of what we are doing together; the car now is amazing. At the same time I feel I am at a high level but I am surprised to be winning so many races. The start again was a key moment; I did a really good launch, Davidovski lost some positions and I used the opportunity. I could overtake two or three places around the outside and afterwards I was very comfortable behind Jack Young. When I saw the Honda behind me I asked on the radio ‘is that Girolami or Davidovski?’ and the team said ‘it’s Girolami – push, push!’ Young didn’t really block me, so it was very easy for me and after that it was just managing the gap. A good, comfortable race for me.”
Franco Girolami (2nd): “I’m really happy for everybody with this result – for the mechanics, the engineers, my brother who is here and all the PSS team. We did everything we could to get second place, yesterday and today, and this is really the maximum we could do. Azcona is on another planet – he is very fast and he has a very good car. I am very happy because we did the maximum possible result for us. We did a very clever first lap, I overtook something four or five cars and someone in front of me made a mistake and I was able to move up another place. I am very happy.”
Jack Young (3rd): “We didn’t have the best of starts yesterday and we didn’t think we had the pace going into Race 2 but straight away we got a good start and could hang onto first place for the first three laps. After that, Mikel and Franco came charging through the field; I wasn’t going to fight with them because I know they’re going for the Championship. I could just see Galáš coming for me lap after lap, it got a bit tense but we managed to hang on. On the last lap there was a bit of contact from the Peugeot which I thought was a bit unfair but it got sorted out afterwards and we ended up P3. I don’t think there was much left in the car, to be honest, but I think we did the best we could with sixty kilos and ended up on the podium, so we can’t complain. I’m just looking forward to Monza and getting all that weight out of the car!”
