Quotes from the podium finishers in Race 1

Mikel Azcona (1st): “It’s a fantastic result to win the first race of the weekend - it’s the best feeling! We made a decision in Qualifying that meant I started from P13, but we made absolutely the right decision with the tyres for the race. The conditions were very tricky; there was still a lot of water on the track and I had to get temperature into the front tyres because I took slicks on the front. On the first laps, I tried to get the heat into the tyres and it worked. It was an amazing race - good, clean overtakes and good moves from our side. Passing Tom for the lead was close; it was very fair, with no touching, but it was very close, so it was really good for the fans. I was much faster than him, so he didn’t really close the door a lot, so I have to thank him for that. Lets see the weather for tomorrows race, but if its dry I think we have another good chance.”

Tom Coronel (2nd): “It was a close one; I was leading until the last few laps and at one point I had a lead of something like four or five seconds. Azcona made the right decision with the slick tyres; he got the heat into them and at the end I could see him catching me quite easily. That was a pity, but it was one of those strategies; you choose the rain tyre and you make good distance in the beginning so you’re out of troubles. At the start I saw Filippi next to me in the first corner and I thought it was going to be interesting. Then I overtook Bennani on the inside at Pouhon, then it was the Safety Car. After the restart I built a gap, but then I could see Azcona catching me. I couldn’t understand why he had so much grip until I saw he had slicks. You never know here in Spa - dry, wet, dry, wet, so there’s an option for everyone. I think we did well, we had some difficulties yesterday but finally we had a good Qualifying where I took some risks with the tyres. I am very, very happy with the result; we needed this for the European championship with the Honda.”

Mike Halder (3rd): “I’m really happy to go from P7 to P3 with all my championship rivals behind me, so we made the gap in the standings a little bit bigger. The team did a really good job, so I want to thank them. It was crazy on the grid, because I saw Comtoyou putting slicks on the front wheels on their cars; they know this circuit so well and how slicks work in the rain. I decided to use wet tyres and I think that was the right choice. I took no risks when I passed other cars, also Filippi made a very good job. I could see where he was faster and where I was faster; I saw I had a slight gap to Andreas Bäckman, so I could pick my moment. The fight actually started about three or four corners before I actually passed him. He was very fair. Tomorrow, Ill start from P3 and so I think its a good starting place for good points, so we will see.”
