Mehdi Bennani (1st): “For sure, every time it’s exciting to make pole, even in these damp conditions because it’s not dry and it’s not wet. The team did a fantastic job to do exactly what we needed to do in the short time we had before Qualifying, so I’m really, really happy with the work we all did today. We are driving on the limits and it’s very easy to make a mistake. I’m happy that this time the mistakes actually favoured me and were on my side for a change. I didn’t know I was P1 until the team told me; you never know in these conditions and the last driver to do a lap is the last one to find all the best grip, so it’s not decided until right at the very end.”
Tom Coronel (2nd): “To be honest, this result is a big surprise! I think in this case, it’s one of those things when experience is really important and our call was really the best one. I was pushing the front tyres and told the guys to put them on the rear, so we had full slicks. It was dirty at the entries to the corners and there was oversteer, but I decided to use full slicks and it worked out. On the last two laps, it started to rain, and I thought ‘uh oh, we could be in trouble’ but that was it and I was reasonably happy. I know I won’t stay in P2 as the other guys are faster than me on the straight and so I will be a sitting duck, but I will happily take this moment of fame! The confidence is always there, in fact I think my problem is over-confidence which is my handicap, but it also helps like in this case.”
John Filippi (3rd): “I’m quite happy with P3. The conditions were really tricky; in fact, it’s one of the most difficult Qualifying sessions I can remember. You don’t know from lap to lap how the track will be, whether or not it’s improving. From Q1 to Q2 we were thinking if we should put all slick tyres on the car - at the end, we decided to take the risk and it worked. It meant good points from Qualifying for me and the team, but of course I don’t know how much weight that means I will have for the next race but I prefer to stay focused for today and tomorrow. We had to take a decision on the setup when we saw that the track was still wet, so we went for the wet setup and after that it was up to the tyres and the driving.”
