Ruben Volt was one of six drivers to receive a post-race penalty at the Hungaroring, with the Estonian driver’s sanction costing him victory and even a points finish. This promotes pole-sitter Marco Butti to first place, with the Italian claiming his first win of the year.
Volt was handed a 30-second penalty, in lieu of a drive-through, after the stewards concluded that the ALM Motorsport team was working on one of the tyres after the five-minute board was shown. This was considered in breach of the sporting regulations, which state that no team may perform any mechanical operation in relation to wheels or nuts, including tyre pressure checks.
The resulting penalty, given the late-race safety car which bunched up the field, means Volt drops from first to 18th in the revised provisional result for today’s race.
Further penalties handed out included a ten-second penalty for Giacomo Prandelli for his involvement in the crash which caused guest driver János Czik to exit the race and trigger the safety car deployment. Santiago Concepción also received a ten-second penalty following an incident with Adam Shepherd, while Victor Chan was given a ten-second penalty for colliding with Gabriele Covini at Turn 2. Finally, Covini himself received a 30-second penalty for driving too fast during the safety car procedure to catch up to the pack, following the pit stop he took for repairs after his incident with Chan.
The revised result sees Butti win the race ahead of Tiago Pernía’s Honda, with Butti’s Monlau Motorsport team-mate Viktor Andersson promoted to third on the podium.
Mike Halder moves up to fourth with team-mate Max Hart fifth behind him, while Alex Ley and Adam Shepherd are now sixth and seventh.
Points leader Nicolas Taylor, who had finished 11th in the original classification, salvages some more points and is now eighth, with Felipe Fernández and Junui Park completing the top ten.
The result remains provisional due to ongoing investigations which will conclude tomorrow morning ahead of Race 2, which is scheduled for 13:00 CEST.
