Santiago Concepción delighted with front row after qualifying drama

Santiago Concepción will be the best-starting young drivers’ trophy driver, starting from the outside of the front row tomorrow in his RC2 Racing Team Honda, and is delighted with his qualifying despite being the fastest of all in yesterday’s test, following an issue on his second run in qualifying.

Concepción’s first time was just over a tenth away from the best set by his team-mate Felipe Fernández, and Concepción knew there was more time to come on his second lap, before trouble hit on his final flying run.

“It’s an incredible feeling after quali,” he said. “ I got a bit in trouble in Q2, as on my second hot lap the car turned off completely, and then I had no power steering.

“Fortunately my first hot lap was good. My second lap would have been better, I wasn’t too happy with my first lap, but I’m still happy to be P3, and now to start on the front row. I’m happy as the championship this year is very competitive, the first three drivers here are all between one tenth of a second.”

With both the RC2 Racing Team Hondas starting from the front row, the young Spaniard, who is being coached by Kumho FIA TCR World Tour points leader Esteban Guerrieri, says the goal will be to get the best result for the team tomorrow.

“We’ll talk in the team about tomorrow, and the possibilities we have for the race. Nothing can ever go exactly to plan, so we may have to improvise.”
