Victor Chan put on a pair of star drives at the Hungaroring, claiming both wins in the Tenerife Trophy category, and battling at the front in both races, with the Hong Kong driver enjoying his best weekend to-date in any TCR competition.
The RC2 Racing Team driver first was fourth quickest in Qualifying 1, easily progressing to Qualifying 2, while by setting the tenth fastest time he claimed pole position for the reversed grid second race for Sunday afternoon.
In Race 1, he showed great pace, battling his way forward and soon found himself involved in a fight with BRC Racing Team’s Gabriele Covini. Unfortunately, it ended when Chan tapped Covini in the rear, knocking him wide and also damaging his bodywork. While Chan crossed the line fifth, he was later demoted to 12th after receiving a ten-second penalty for the incident, but was still classed as the Tenerife Trophy winner.
In Race 2 on Sunday, Chan bogged down from pole position and fell to fourth, but was quickly trying to regain the ground he’d lost. After coming up against his Saturday rival Gabriele Covini again, his race was soon undone, this time in a reversal of Saturday, it was Covini who collided with Chan at Turn 3 on lap three, spinning Chan off and to the back of the pack.
Chan managed to drive back through to finish ninth overall and also secure his second Tenerife Trophy class victory in a row.
“I think from the start from Thursday it’s been a dream weekend for me, as I’ve only been racing for two and a half years,” said Chan. “I was very surprised about my time in Q1, it was the first time in my racing life I’ve got into Q2, and in the race my pace was quite good, and finishing on the podium was more than I can ask for.
“It was definitely not a good start in Race 2 but it was at least a start. I had more pace than the cars ahead, so it was such a shame about the incident, as I would have been in a much better position. However, for me, I’m happy for the whole weekend.”
