Viktor Andersson equals best result with hard-fought second place at Spa

Swedish driver Viktor Andersson took his sixth podium finish in TCR Europe, fighting hard throughout Race 1 to keep back the challenging Honda of Mike Halder to score his first podium with CUPRA in the series.

While Felipe Fernández’s Honda was uncatchable up front, Andersson’s second place ensured he won the Youth Best class in Saturday’s race. Sunday’s race was a different matter, the 22-year-old found himself battling in the midfield from eighth on the grid, and though he came in for a tyre change at exactly the same time as eventual race winner Ruben Volt, the switch to mixed slicks and wets proved to be the wrong call, with an all wet set-up providing more grip and would indeed be the race-winning strategy.

Still, Andersson picked up strong points with 12th and more points in the Youth Best category. As a result, he’s seventh in the overall standings, while he’s joint-second with Monlau Motorsport team-mate Marco Butti in the young drivers’ classification.

“In Race 1, we had a great start and moved up to second, but it was not a calm race. I had Mike in my mirrors the whole race, we had great fights and I’m happy to come out on top. I’m super-happy to finish in P2, and to have Marco P3 to have a double Monlau podium is really great for the team.”
