Viktor Andersson will be back for his third season in the TCR Europe series this year, again entering a Lynk & Co 03 TCR run by family squad MA:GP, overseen by experienced Swedish touring car racer Mattias Andersson.
One of the smallest teams on the grid, the Linköping-based squad punched above its weight many times last season, finishing on the podium three times, and was in the hunt for fourth in the drivers’ title right up until the last weekend in Spain.
The 21-year-old Andersson will also be eligible to compete for the new young drivers’ trophy, which is open to competitors who are 21 years of age or younger at the start of the calendar year.
“I’m really looking forward to it, and it’s the third year for our team, so we’ve learned a lot from the two seasons in the past,” said Viktor Andersson. “The calendar is much more like our first year in 2023, when we were racing on the bigger circuits too
“The goal is to be in the top three of the championship standings at the end of the year, and also hopefully to fight for the young drivers’ trophy.
“We have had a look over the car over the winter, and now that it’s finally stopped snowing here in Sweden we’ll be out testing before the end of March to be fully prepared for Portimão.”
Team principal Mattias Andersson, an experienced touring car star from the golden era of touring car racing in his native Sweden, is looking forward to the team’s third year in the series, after moving over from the TCR Scandinavia championship and handing the reins to his son Viktor.
“Last year we started the year a little bit slow, but were much stronger at the end of the season, so hopefully we’ll be able to continue the momentum we had at the end of last year,” he said.
“We’ll be back with our 2022-specification Lynk & Co. We’ll continue with our orange colour, it’s simple and it’s good to have a car that’s easy to spot on the circuit. The goal is to do the six rounds of TCR Europe, and it’ll be good to maybe do one of the World Tour events in Europe, and then also look at the FIA TCR World Ranking Final.”
With the series visiting Portimão, Spa-Francorchamps, Hockenheim, Misano, Red Bull Ring, and Barcelona this year, it’s a heavily refreshed calendar at circuits which should suit the team, which took two pole positions back in 2023.
“It’s always nice when you’re racing on Formula 1 circuits, the only one that isn’t is Misano, and that’s a very nice circuit anyway, I raced there back in the 2000s,” added Mattias Andersson.
“The prize of having support to move up to the next level in the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour is also a good step, it’s some help like they do in America. It’s something that really helps and is also good publicity for the championship.”
